Rotorua Dining

Rotorua has an abundance of fabulous eateries to indulge every appetite. Most can be found on 'Eat Streat', a centrally located street in the city closed off to traffic and lined with outdoor tables, flower beds and delectable dining experiences.

Eat Streat

Situated at the lake end of Tutanekai Street, between Pukaki and Whakaue Streets, Eat Streat has undergone a revamp for the 2008/2009 New Zealand summer. It is part of the local councils plans to revitalise the Rotorua city centre, and local restaurant owners have been instrumental in the success of the project.
Providing exceptional quality in wines and food, plus live entertainment most Sunday evenings, Eat Streat is vibrant, offers variety and is a veritable venue of good taste. Bon Appétit!

Dining with Culture

As they say, 'When in Rome', and when in Rotorua, take the opportunity to experience a variety of authentic Maori kai - food. Combining traditional Maori cultural entertainment with the exquisite and wholesome taste of pre-European cuisine, there are a number of excellent venues to experience the richness of the indigenous people of New Zealand.
From the traditional Hangi to sumptuous buffets offering the finest of New Zealand's bounty, including the Maori staple native root vegetable, the Kumera, (sweet potato), an authentic Maori meal is a must in Rotorua.

The Hangi

An innovative method of cooking a meal for the tribe, the hangi is essentially an earth oven. Utilising hot rocks, steam, layers of blanketing, and earth, the laying of a hangi is an intricate and time consuming process. But the outcome is a delectable delight nurtured and cooked by the earth itself!
Choosing a sight, digging the pit, heating particularly chosen igneous, (volcanic), rocks, preparing and laying out the food, and timing the hangi to perfection are all unique skills handed down through generations. The hangi is a distinctive dining experience, a truly ancient way of feasting and is offered in all its flavoursome bounty to visitors to Rotorua today.
