A biographical account of the life of Janet Frame (Kerry Fox/Alexia Keogh/Karen Fergusson), a sweet-natured but painfully shy and insecure red-headed woman who battles schizophrenia, but goes on to become an acclaimed novelist. Was the first New Zealand film to screen in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Many international festival awards. Filmed in Auckland, Helensville, Kariotahi and Cook Strait among various NZ locations.

AVAILABILITY OF VHS OR DVD COPIES

An R4 pal re-issue is available from NZ sources for about $20nz and $25au in Australia. An R2 DVD is available from UK sources for about 10# and elsewhere in Europe for about 16eur. Extras include: 3 Jane Campion interviews; theatrical trailer; a Janet Frame bio; filmographies and a still gallery. There are no subtitles. The dvd is 1.33:1 Full Frame, 2.0 dolby digital. Used vhs are selling for about $5us and new vhs are selling for up to $20us.
Criterion is distributing an R1 NTSC dual-layer DVD-9 digital transfer supervised by Stuart Dryburgh and approved by Jane Campion. There is a dolby digital 5.1 soundtrack remastered from the original 24 multitrack masters and it is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1. It also contains extras of: optional audio commentary featuring Jane Campion, Stuart Dryburgh and Kerry Fox; a 10 min. documentary on the "making of"; deleted scenes; original theatrical trailer; optional English subtitles; a 23 min.1982 audio interview with Janet Frame and a 40 page booklet featuring a film essay by critic Amy Taubin, plus excepts from Janet Frame's autobiography. It is selling for about $36us new or $20us used.
